Very Good

The hotel is made entirely of wood - village cottages style, which unfortunately affects the audibility. The neighbors from upper floor roared until midnight and we had to ask them to calm down.
The food in the restaurant was nice and not expensive.
The car park was not enough for all customers.

Basic but fantastic location
The hotel is basic, but in a fantastic location. The staff are friendly and helpful. The beds were not as comfy as I'd like and the breakfast could be improved, however dinner was excellent, we ate here every night of our stay. The hotel provides great value for money and is perfect for exploring the mountains.

Fantastic position.
Fantastic position. The hotel itself is dated so not for you if you're looking for luxury. But if all you want is somewhere comfortable to sleep and a beautiful view this is it. The food is good and there is lots of hot water.
Reasonably comfortable and basic place to stay, but clean and well priced. Friendly reception and beautiful setting (though you will need a hire car!)
We stayed in the chalet style rooms at the rear - it was noisy in the morning when other guests were walking around upstairs.

Heating
Hotel needs geneeral heating in winter months so too cold until may
Such a wonderful establishment, setting and scenery out this world,a very warm friendly welcome after a day exploring,we stopped in the lodge just a few minutes walk from the main building, wow!a log cabin so so amazing set in the woods,we enjoyed everything here, food was a highlight of our week in madeira here, you just have to sample the local fishes, prepared to perfection, thank you so much to the team,we were sorry to leave
I was very satisfied with this hotel and would recommend it to those who like something else than beach hotel resorts and who can appreciate good cuisine.

Friendly but slightly tired building. Food plentiful, but a bit basic.
Our second stay here was just as good value for money with friendly staff in a beautiful place.
The rooms are rustic and have everything needed.
I would recommend the hotel to other walkers but not if you are aft a nightlife.
Enjoyed the location of hotel but felt they could try harder to offer a more up to date experience. Bedroom gloomy with too much dark varnish - very 70s. Nonetheless, comfortable bed - did not like sheets (polyester). But rather cold - arrived in very bad weather and took ages to warm up. Public rooms also lacked warmth. Overall reasonably priced but needs injection of funds to improve quality of furnishings, food and facilities and could then increase price of rooms!

Great food, quite, polite staff, must have a car
Surroundings are very beautiful, and quite. However, car is a must, cause civilization is far away. Rooms are big and clean, but old. Staff and service are great, food was really good. Breakfasts were boring. Overall a nice hotel. Recommended.
Excellent location, fantastic views. Great food - well recommended. Comfortable room with wonderful views. Very friendly staff, treated you like family. Nothing to much trouble. Excellent place to start walks from. Would like to visit this hotel again in the future and would recommend it to anyone looking at this review.
We enjoyed every minute of our stay up in the mountains, from the view from our window in the morning, to fantastic hikes in the dramatic scenery around the area, to good meals on the terrace of the hotel restaurant and good nights' sleep in very comfortable rooms. Don't miss it!
This hotel was a fantastic place to stay for our walking holiday. The location is stunning, nestled into the folds of the mountain with wonderful views of the surrounding peaks and down to the sea. From the hotel access to all of the western side of the island is easy with both lavada and mountain walks close by.
The staff were the nicest of all. Attentive, polite, helpful and with a lovely sense of fun. They helped make our stay more enjoyable. Even the mix up with the bill was easily settled!
We stayed in the adjacent lodge where the rooms are large enough, beds comfortable but the bathroom was a little 'tired, but always plentiful hot water. Beware though, noise from surrounding rooms does travel through the structure.
The food was good and plentiful. Packed lunches are made for you but ask if they can use the bread rolls supplied for breakfast! The local sliced white is an acquired taste.
Overall we really enjoyed our stay and would return given the chance.
Loved the quirkiness of this hotel. Setting absolutely stunning- surrounding mountains make the most beautiful backdrop.
Must have a car, but to get the best out of Madeira, you can't get by without one. Hotel restaurant is only restaurant around but the food is great so no complaints. Would definitely stay there again.
Staff were A1,very helpful, friendly and very good at their job ie making your stay as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. The restaurant served very good food made from local sourced ingredients, a good wine selection and the portuguese brandy was very very good. My room was in a block of log cabins just off of the main building, very comfortable twin bed jobby, with views of mountains which were often capped by clouds late afternoon, I could see all the way down the valley to the sea some 3 or so miles away. The hotel is situated about central on Madeira and a good base to explore the island.Oh and the breakfast was to die for,you could make it about a 7 course affair if you were in a mind to.
You will love this hotel if you like historic, wooden hotels with fantastic mountain views. The only downside is it is a bit noisy (wooden walls everywhere, including the main house), but for most walkers this is not really a big problem as you don't want to sleep in anyway. The half board option is a must if you don't have your own transport as it is a long walk to the nearest restaurant and the hotel restaurant is often full so if you have not booked dinner in advance it is hard to get in. However be aware that although perfectly good and inexpensive, half board is a standard dinner menu (with choice of meat or fish main) and if you want something else you might want to negotiate with the hotel. For those without their own transport, there are regular buses to trailheads at Encumeada pass. The newly (April 2012) renovated levada walk up from the road up from the pass in the direction of Rabacal signposted to the Pinaculo is not difficult, fairly free of walkers so far, and highly recommended (waterfalls falling over the path and fabulous views).
